Every time you buy a packet of cigarettes, you decidedly choose to ignore the statutory warning that comes with the pack – "Smoking is injurious to health." But maybe its time to shed your nonchalance and take the warning seriously in the light that the percentage of people contracting lung and oral cancer is on the rise and most of them are smokers. It has been estimated that there are around 1.45 billion smokers in the world in 2010 which will rise to a 1.9 billion smokers by 2025. It is not easy to quit smoking and if you think that you can quit smoking in a day, then you just do not possess the right mindset that one should have when one is trying to quit. The most important thing is to admit to your self that it is not an easy habit to kick, and it requires a very committed mindset even to begin the process.
One of the most imperative and supportive technique that you can practice during the first few days as a non-smoker is by taking in deep breaths every time you crave for a puff of your cigarette. This is a variant of yoga which will help you to relax. Also it is advisable to take in a lot of fluids especially during the first few days of your new regime. Drinking lots of water will wash out the nicotine that has been deposited in your body over the period of your smoking years.
If you are serious about quitting smoking then you should be willing to make a few sacrifices during the first few weeks. It is better if you avoid alcohol, coffee and sugar as these have a tendency to amplify your longing for a cigarette. After dinner when you would usually go out for a smoke, indulge yourself in either herbal or mint tea. Also since you are not taking in nicotine anymore, your metabolism rate will decrease and it is better to avoid fatty food if you do not want to gain weight.
There are other ways to quit smoking too, which maybe a little unconventional. Hypnosis is one such method. Audio CDs are now available which brings your conscious and unconscious in sync with each other, relaxing and de-stressing your mind and you will find that the previous connection that existed between smoking and all other activities in your day to day life has been snapped. However this is the only method in which one will not suffer from nicotine withdrawal. You can also go for a nicotine patch that is a branch of the nicotine replacement therapy (NRT). You can put on the patch on any part of your body, but the left arm is the usual place where people put in the patch; the patch releases nicotine that enters the body through the skin.
Some quitters have said that they quit smoking following a step by step course of action. You can start by cutting down on the number of cigarettes that you smoke in a day instead of giving it all up the next day. In this way you can prepare both your mind and body into believing that you need less and less amount of nicotine and that you are doing great. Do not feel shy or ashamed to seek help or counsel from friends and family; their support can do wonders for boosting your confidence.
Smoking is not attractive and if you are smoking just to make yourself look cool, you are sadly mistaken. The only thing smoking can give is bad breath, gum disease, wrinkles, loss of hair and I assure you that none of the above are attractive.
